Why is my blood pressure higher in the morning?
Blood pressure naturally rises in the early morning as the body wakes: stress hormones climb before you even open your eyes. A modest morning bump is normal biology.
A large morning surge can also come from poor sleep, alcohol the night before, sleep apnea, or a medicine dose that wears off overnight. Measuring before your morning pills, seated and rested, shows the true picture.
Bring a week of morning and evening readings to your doctor. The pattern between them matters more than any one number.

See a doctor promptly if
- A reading of 180/120 mmHg or higher with chest pain, breathlessness, weakness on one side, slurred speech, confusion or sudden visual change. This is an emergency
- Blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or higher in pregnancy, especially with headache, upper abdominal pain, visual disturbance or sudden swelling
- A repeated reading of 180/120 mmHg or higher even without symptoms. This needs same-day medical assessment
- New severe headache, nosebleeds that will not stop, or breathlessness lying flat alongside high readings
- Blood in the urine, or a sharp fall in how much urine you pass, together with high readings
Morning readings, and what to do with them
| Result | In short | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| A first reading higher than the second | Normal | Almost everyone's first reading is the highest. Take two or three, one minute apart, and use the average of the last two. |
| Morning higher than evening by 5 to 10 | Normal pattern | Blood pressure follows a daily rhythm and rises in the hours around waking. A small morning-evening gap is the expected shape, not a finding. |
| Morning average above 135/85 | Worth confirming | Home averages above this level over a week are the threshold most guidelines use, and they matter more than any single clinic reading. |
| Morning above 135/85, evening normal | Morning hypertension | A recognised pattern, and the timing of medicine is one of the things a doctor will look at. Bring the week of readings rather than the worry. |
| Taken within 30 minutes of waking, coffee or a cigarette | Retake it | Caffeine, nicotine, a full bladder and the first half hour after waking all inflate the number. Sit quietly for five minutes first. |
| Consistently above 180/110 at any hour | Same-week care | This level needs medical attention within days. With chest pain, breathlessness, vision change or weakness, it is an emergency now. |
One reading is a moment, not a diagnosis. A week of readings taken the same way, morning and evening, is what a doctor can act on. Check it against the guidelines.

If you are buying a monitor
Get an upper-arm cuff, not a wrist one, from a validated brand like Omron. Expect $30 to $60. Check the cuff size fits your arm; a too-small cuff reads high.
Buying through this link supports the free library with a small commission. It never changes a pick.
