How do I get rid of a coated tongue?

You get rid of a coated tongue by brushing it gently once a day and drinking more water. Most white coating is harmless debris and bacteria, thicker after dry mouth, mouth breathing, dehydration, smoking or a soft diet, and it clears in days.

Patches that wipe off leaving redness suggest thrush, more likely after antibiotics, with inhaled steroids, diabetes or dentures, and it treats easily once confirmed.

A white patch that cannot be wiped off and persists beyond two weeks, especially in smokers or drinkers, needs a dentist or doctor to look. That one is not a hygiene issue.

See a doctor promptly if

  • A white or red patch on the tongue that cannot be brushed or scraped away and lasts more than two weeks
  • A coating with pain, burning, bleeding, or a patch that keeps growing
  • A coated tongue with mouth soreness after antibiotics, steroids or chemotherapy, or with a weakened immune system, which suggests thrush that needs treatment
