How long can you hold your breath?

A guided check. The screen coaches every breath, times your hold, and tells you what the number does and does not mean.

Before you start

  • Sit down. Never standing, driving, or near water.
  • Stop the moment you feel dizzy. This is not a competition.
  • Skip it if you are pregnant or have a heart or seizure condition, unless your doctor says otherwise.

If you are buying a pulse oximeter

A fingertip oximeter under $30 is accurate enough for home use. Warm hands, sit still, and read the number after 30 seconds, not the first flicker.

Common questions

How long should a healthy person be able to hold their breath?
Most untrained adults can comfortably hold a full breath for about 25 to 40 seconds. Trained swimmers and singers often manage a minute or more. Under 15 to 20 seconds on repeated relaxed attempts is on the low side, but nerves, technique and a full stomach all shorten a hold, so one short attempt on its own means very little.
Does a short breath-hold mean my lungs are bad?
Not by itself. Breath-hold time reflects a mix of lung capacity, fitness, anxiety and simple practice, so it cannot diagnose anything. The finding that matters is a short hold combined with real-life breathlessness, such as struggling on stairs or waking short of breath. That combination is worth describing to your own doctor.
Is holding my breath dangerous?
For most people a voluntary breath-hold while sitting is safe, because the body forces you to breathe long before harm. Do it sitting down, never in water and never while driving, and stop the moment you feel dizzy. Skip the test if you are pregnant or have a heart or seizure condition, unless your own doctor says it is fine.
Can I improve my breath-hold time?
Yes, and fairly quickly. Regular aerobic exercise, stopping smoking and simple daily practice all lengthen a comfortable hold within weeks. Slow nasal breathing exercises help too. Treat the number as a fitness marker you can train, not a fixed grade on your lungs.
