Why does every doctor keep asking for my full medication list?

Your full medication list matters because interactions and duplications hospitalize people daily. Two doctors may innocently prescribe similar drugs. A supplement can block an antibiotic. A painkiller can quietly strain kidneys already on a diuretic. The list is the collision map.

Full means everything: prescriptions, over-the-counter painkillers, antacids, vitamins, herbal products, and doses.

Keep one current list on paper or phone, bring it to every appointment and pharmacy visit, and update it when anything changes. It is the single highest-value document a patient carries, and takes ten minutes to make.

See a doctor promptly if

  • Chest pain, severe breathlessness, one-sided weakness, slurred speech or a sudden severe headache. These need emergency care, not an appointment
  • A symptom that is getting rapidly worse while you wait for a scheduled appointment
  • Feeling unsafe, or having thoughts of harming yourself. Say this at the start of the consultation, not the end

On more than two daily medicines

A weekly organizer prevents the double-dose and missed-dose mistakes every doctor sees. The simplest ones work best, filled once a week at the same time.
