How soon after eating is diarrhea a problem?

Diarrhea within an hour of eating is usually the gastrocolic reflex firing too hard, which is uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Diarrhea that arrives hours later points at the meal itself, and diarrhea that wakes you at night is the one worth a doctor, whatever the timing.

Common aggravators: large fatty meals, caffeine, stress, and sometimes lactose or fructose.

Track which meals trigger it. Urgency with blood, night-time diarrhea, fever or weight loss moves this from irritable bowel territory to something needing tests.

See a doctor promptly if

  • Blood in the stool, or black tarry stools
  • Diarrhea that wakes you from sleep
  • Unintended weight loss, or a fever with the diarrhea
  • Diarrhea lasting more than two weeks without settling
  • Signs of dehydration: dizziness on standing, very dark urine, confusion
  • New persistent diarrhea starting after age 50, or a family history of bowel cancer

For vomiting or diarrhea

Rehydration salts replace fluid better than water or sports drinks. Keep a few sachets at home; nobody wants to shop for them while sick.
