What is a good VO2 max for my age?

For men, the middle of the range is about 48 in the twenties, 42 in the thirties, 38 in the forties and 28 in the sixties, in ml per kg per minute. For women the same decades run roughly 38, 30, 27 and 20. Those come from 7,783 treadmill tests with a mask on, so they are measured rather than estimated.

The band matters more than the digit. Sitting in the top quarter for your age is where the survival advantage in the big cohorts shows up, and the gap between the bottom quarter and the top few percent was larger than the gap between smokers and non-smokers in the same model.

One caution about the number itself: a watch estimate and a formula estimate both carry about five points of error, which is a whole band. Use either to work out roughly where you stand, not to judge a month of training.
