Is an eGFR of 60 bad?

An eGFR of 60 is the lower edge of the normal range. Above 60 with no protein in the urine is considered normal kidney function; 45 to 59 is stage 3a chronic kidney disease if it persists for three months.

At 60 the question is the trend and the urine. A urine albumin test (ACR) and a repeat eGFR in three months tell you whether this is stable or slipping.

eGFR falls slowly with age, so 60 at 75 is less concerning than 60 at 40. Blood pressure control, diabetes control and avoiding regular ibuprofen are what protect it.

See a doctor promptly if

  • Passing much less urine than usual, or none at all
  • A sharp fall in eGFR over days to weeks rather than years
  • Visible blood in the urine, or heavy frothy urine with swollen ankles and face
  • Breathlessness with swelling and a known low eGFR
  • An eGFR below 30 that you have not yet discussed with a doctor
  • New confusion, vomiting or a very low urine output during an illness
