Eye Strain From Screens: What Helps and What Does Not
A doctor explains why screens make eyes ache, why blue-light glasses disappoint, and the workstation changes that reliably reduce digital eye strain.

The short version
- Screen use causes tired, dry, aching eyes but does not damage them. The symptoms come from reduced blinking and sustained close focusing, not from the light itself.

Screens make your eyes ache because you stop blinking properly and hold a single close focus for hours, not because the light is harmful. Nothing is being damaged, which is why the symptoms disappear after a night's sleep and why the fixes are all about breaks, distance and lighting.
The medical name is digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome. It covers tired eyes, blurring at the end of the day, dryness or grittiness, headache across the brows, and neck ache that people often blame on their eyes.
Why it happens#
Three mechanisms, all reversible.
Blinking collapses. Concentrated screen work drops blink rate from around 15 to 20 a minute to as few as 5 to 7, and many of those blinks are incomplete. The tear film breaks up and the eye surface dries.
The focusing muscle holds one position. The ciliary muscle contracts to focus at 50 to 70 centimeters and then stays contracted. Sustained contraction of any muscle aches.
Small uncorrected errors get magnified. A mild long-sighted prescription or early presbyopia after about age 40 is invisible in daily life and punishing over eight hours of text.
What actually works#
- The 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet, 6 meters, away for 20 seconds. It relaxes focus and triggers blinking.
- Screen distance of an arm's length, roughly 50 to 70 cm, with the top of the screen at or just below eye level, so your gaze angles slightly down.
- Text large enough to read comfortably at that distance. Increasing font size is not cheating.
- Ambient lighting around 300 to 500 lux for general office work, with the screen brighter than the room but not by much. No window directly behind or directly in front of the screen; sit side-on to it.
- Preservative-free lubricating drops if dryness is the main symptom, used through the day rather than only when it hurts.
- An up-to-date eye test. In the UK, display screen equipment users are entitled to an employer-funded eye test under the DSE Regulations, and to a contribution towards glasses if a special prescription is needed for screen distance.
What is oversold#
Blue-light filtering lenses are the clearest example. Randomised trials, pooled in a Cochrane review, found no meaningful reduction in eye strain compared with ordinary lenses. Screen brightness matters more than screen color, and daylight contains far more blue light than any monitor.
Anti-glare screen overlays help only if you have actual glare, which is a lighting problem you can usually solve for free. Eye exercises marketed to remove the need for glasses do not correct refractive error.
At work#
In a plant or office setting, the recurring causes I see are the same four: a screen too far to the side forcing a rotated neck, a laptop used all day without a separate keyboard so the screen sits far too low, overhead lighting reflecting off a glossy panel, and workers over 40 who have not had an eye test since school. All four are cheap to fix, and a DSE assessment should catch every one of them.
Bifocals are a particular problem at a screen. People tip the head back to use the reading segment and end up with neck pain within weeks. Dedicated screen-distance lenses solve it.
